Q: I am looking into buying a used 2003 Ford Escape, but it has 104,000 miles on it. Should I be concerned?
I am looking at a used 2003 Ford Escape for $7,695.00. It is a XLT 4×4 with leather interior, very clean with a perfect interior and exterior, engine area looks good and everything is visibly in great condition. The thing that worries me is that it has 104,000 miles on it. Is this a good deal?

A: I’d say no just because im not a big Ford fan. If this was a Chevy or Dodge vehicle then id say yes. It’s not too steep of a price but I bought my car ( Chevy Malibu 04′ ) when it had 20,000 miles on it for $9,000. Granted the Ford cost’s more but when you factor the miles it seems steep. If I were you I would look around a bit more and if nothing else you like comes up then go for it.

Q: How would one determine the litres per 100 km a used car consumes?
for a used ford escape
Okay, would the fuel economy of a car worsen if it is used? For the car listed above.

A: This must be a joke. The fuel economy of your Ford escape is 0 litres per km if it is not used. If you decide to drive it , then it can vary by many things. How about you just search out the year, make, model of your vehicle and see what comes up. I have no idea what your vehicle has on it. Fill it up, drive 100 km , then fill it up again and see what it used. every vehicle is different

Q: How to carry bikes using 2001-2005 Factory Ford escape Roof Rack?
I’m looking for the best way to haul my bikes while towing a pop-up camper, looking into Roof Rack systems. My 01 Escape XLT has the factory ford roof racks with 2 cross bars and 2 tie down hooks. Is there a system out there that fits in the roof racks rails to haul bikes? or attaches to the cross bars? Hoping to use some of the existing rack without drilling any new holes in the roof.

Thanks!
-Cory

A: You might consider getting Thule feet that attach to the track on top of your car (no new holes). Then integrate Wasatch Powder Monkey SmartCrossbars™ for a more advanced rack system that costs much less to have on your car due to improved mileage – it is so aerodynamic, you can barely hear the crossbars when not using them to carry equipment.

For feet, you can use:
- Thule 430 Tracker II Foot Pack with the TK kit, http://www.thule.com/en/US/Products/BaseRacks/Feet/430%20Tracker%20II%20Foot%20Pack.aspx

With any of those feet, you can easily use SmartCrossbars™ to upgrade your roof rack system to the only quick-release, fully integrated rack and storage system. Check out the SmartCrossbars™ at http://SmartCrossbars.com and reach out to us at info@wasatchpowdermonkeys.com if you have any questions.

Q: Which should used car should I buy Nissan Xterra, Ford Explorer, Ford Escape?

A: Buy the one that is in the best condition that you can afford. Buying based on nothing more than brand is a sure way to get ripped off.

Q: Can I change my oil less frequently if I use full synthetic oil? I have a 2002 Ford Escape.?
I have heard that I if I use full synthetic oil, instead of conventional, I can use it twice as long before and oil change.

Anyone know if the recommended oil change interval on a 2002 Ford Escape is 3,000 miles? Could I essentially double this to 6,000 miles if I use full synthetic?

A: The drain interval depends on the manufacturer of the oil, but yes, most synthetic oils do have about a 7500 mile drain interval.

Since you are interested in synthetic oil, you may be interested in the AMSOIL product line of premium 100% full synthetic oils. AMSOIL is capable of service life drain intervals from 15,000 miles up to 35,000 miles or one year depending on driving conditions. Even if you drive only 12,000 miles per year, the cost for AMSOIL motor oil is less than you would pay for petroleum oil now. And you still get better wear protection, lower engine temperatures, improved fuel efficiency and easier cold-weather starts. All of these benefits add up to reduced operating costs and longer engine life.

For example, over the course of 25,000 miles, the cost of regular dinosaur oil with a drain interval of 3000 miles will require at least 5 quarts and a filter per oil change, for 25,000 miles you will need 40 quarts and 8 filters, this comes to a total of about $168.00 (40 quarts @ $3.00, 8 filters @ $6.00).

For the same vehicle using top-of-the-line AMSOIL 100% Synthetic Oil with a drain interval of 25,000 miles in conjunction with an AMSOIL Absolute Efficiency oil filter, you will need 5 quarts and 1 filter, this comes to a total of about $59.75 (5 quarts @ $8.75, 1 filter @ $16.00).

You would save $108.25 over conventional oil by using AMSOIL premium synthetic oil. This, along with the benefits of better wear protection, lower engine temperatures, improved fuel efficiency and easier cold-weather starts. All of these benefits add up to reduced operating costs and longer engine life.

To find fluid recommendations for your specific vehicle, the AMSOIL Online Product Application Guide will give you all fluid capacities, types, and filter recommendations and is available at our website by following this link:

https://www.amsoil.com/products/application_guide.aspx?zo=1532637

Simply enter your vehicle’s make and model and it will provide you with comprehensive information for all your lubricant, air and oil filtration, spark plug, wire set, and wiper blade needs.

Q: I am buying a used car and know nothing! I am looking at a Ford Escape or something like it. Any Tips?
My car died on me and I need to buy a used car. I don’t have a lot of money to spend and I know absolutely NOTHING about cars or what to look for. Can anyone give me any tips? I am looking at Ford Escapes because something about them I really like. However, something like them could work as well. Really, I have no clue. Anything will help!
I understand that I have to get any car checked out before I actually buy it, and I know about the insurance and everything. All I am asking is for suggestions on what type of car to look at. Maybe cars like the Ford Escape.. of if you think I should look model or dealer.

A: whatever car you buy have it checked ut by a mechanic well worth the money

Q: FORD 09 Escape TPMS dead? Stock wheels with tpms sensors removed. No yellow light on dash (should be). WHY?
Had winter rims installed at dealer yesterday. Current wheels removed and now in my basement. I can confirm that tpms is still on stock wheels in basement, and dealer informed me, you will be seeing yellow light on dash until you reinstall stock wheels in spring.

This is worrysome. TO me It means that the TPMS function is non existant or dead at the control unit level, which is bad in itself, even worse if the instrument cluster is faulty. I have noticed a couple of other things I am not sure if normal (cannot enable or disable autounlock/autolock on manual transmission escape using Ford’s programming sequences, some users have reported impossible altho manual states it is).

Sad for a brand new Escape. Ford techs or engineers pls help. I don’t have hour to spend at dealers, and I am worried about build quality/lemon factor.. Fearing the worst.
My mistake. The light finally came on after several days/20 min. trips.

I guess I assumed it would come on immediately, but it took 2 days.

It blinks and then goes solid every time i drive.
MATT. Another question. I cannot seem to enable autolock or autounlock on my manual transmission (off by default) by following the programming sequences in the manual and online.

Some say it doesn’t work at all for manual trans. no matter what you try.

Do you have any experience with that?

My dealer wants to charge me to investigate it, although I tell him I am following the published sequence and able to enable autolock or autounlock.

Thanks
CORRECTION: My dealer wants to charge me to investigate it (I just bought the car from them), although I tell him I am following the published sequence and UNABLE to enable autolock or autounlock. I have tried the different methods and what others have posted on the internet.

A: Some times the TPMS will not come on all the time for some reason.
I have seen tires that are only 2psi of air out and the light come on, others 7 psi out and and no light on. seems like everyone is a little different to m, not sure how since there supposed to be the same.

The allignment guy at out dealer has TPMS and when he puts his winter rims on he says his light only comes on evry now and and again and it will flash when it does. If all the sensors read the same i find the light does not seem to come on no matter how low the pressures get, so if the module has no signal from all four it may ignore it. and just put the light on when it rounds round doing its system check

It is also possible that the winter rims have sensors installed in them and that the service advisors just warned you about it since the vast majority do not have TPMS sensors. when in fact yours do.

When you get a free moment get the delaer to put there computer on it and they can tell you what is going on.

Not sure about your other issues, at our dealer we have never had one with them problems.

Good luck

Q: Can I use a ford escape to take my road test in nj?

A: You can use any car you want as long as it’s insured and registered. You don’t even have to own it. Just make sure it’s not stolen… >.>

Q: Can you tow a 2005 Ford Escape FWD Hybrid flat or do you have to use a dolly?
I want to buy a used 2005 that I like, but need to know if I can tow it behind my motorhome without using a dolly (flat tow)
Both the 2007 and 2008 Ford Escape FWD Hybrids can only be flat towed or flat trucked, but not the 2005? Can the 2005 be modified to flat tow it?

A: it is a direct drive transmission. no clutches. trans is always engaged. so no real neutral. so towing it flat will cause damage.

Q: Has anyone else had problem with their Ford Escape Catalytic Converter?
I have a 2001 Ford Escape with Catalytic Converter Failure with Bank 1 broken Honey Combs. 120000 Miles. Bank 2 has a Cracked seam by the weld and leaks. This seems to be a common problem with Escapes. I used to like FORDS but man, I am sorry I bought a Ford. Catalytic Converters should last more than 100,000 Miles. I find all kinds of people complaining about their ESCAPES. Why is Ford not doing anything about it? I am very curious if anyone else had Problems with their ESCAPES. Thanks
Check all the people having the same problem. There is no reason why CAT’s of so many people clog up. There is a Design Flaw.

http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/ford-escape/TU78OBKDR1BJG11SO
I am also wondering if the transmission is slipping @ high RPM and sending more fuel to Cylinders than it can handle and the Boom, Explosion. Explosion causing Cats to fail and Blow up the EGR and Manifold.

A: I have heard & read complaints about the 2001 Escapes but NOT about the Catalytic Converter.
There are also NO recalls or TSBs on the Catalytic Converter.

The Manufacturers warranty for all emmissions related items is 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever comes first)
This is the same warranty for all the manufacturers (as far as I know) not just for Ford.

So at 120,000 miles, your Cayalytic Converter has lasted 40,000 miles longer that ANY manufacturer expects them to last.

Q: Is $14,000, out the door, a good deal on this 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid?
Assured out the door, I’ll be very assertive.
76,000 miles, owned by the local Ford dealership, used as their customer shuttle. This looks good to me, compared to Kelly Blue Book, and Edmunds online.
What do you think?
Thank you.
Seen the vehicle, looks great.
Well, thanks, Elvin, I guess. Ya know, I’ve always believed if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

A: Yes it’s a GREAT BUY on a great car.

Q: Ford Escape Hybrid 2009 w/ Microsoft Sync Navigation. Which wire on the back of the stereo is the VSS cable?
Ford Escape Hybrid 2009 w/ Microsoft Sync Navigation. Which wire on the back of the stereo is the VSS cable? I have seen the wiring for the 2008 model and it is different for the 2009. I even have the wiring diagrams for the three connectors going in to back of the navigation/audio unit but they do not clearly state which pin/cable is the VSS/Vehicle Speed Sensor. Below is the name of the 3 connectors and the circuit function for each pin.

A: On newer cars very little is run over individual wires anymore it is just a message on the CAN bus instead. For instance instead of running a couple dozen wires in a thick bundle into the driver’s door for the power windows, locks, mirrors, and sometimes seat you could potentially just run 4 wires with them being power, ground, CAN +, and CAN -. In your case I am guessing you want to disable the VSS input because some parts of the nav are locked out while the car is moving, right? Since a wire isn’t actually labelled VSS I think you will find that the vehicle speed info is just a packet on the CAN bus and filtering it out would be difficult.

Q: Ford Escape PLUG-IN hybrid kit (not Hymotion)?
A few weeks ago I was on a website that spoke of a kit that converts hybrid cars (Prius and Escape) to plug-in hybrids. It also said this kit would cost about $4,000. I was just looking for that website again but all I can find is a kit from “Hymotion” and that one is only for the Prius and it costs $10,000. Apparently they’re going to make a kit for the Ford Escape but it’s not out yet… My wife & I really want to buy a used Escape Hybrid and install one of those kits (next year). If anyone knows about that $4,000 kit I saw please let me know. Thank you.

A: The only thing I can find that even comes close to what you are talking about is a kit that will be released next year by VS Composites and will cost the $4,000.00 you mentioned. From Forbes:

“VS Composites’ $4,000 Electrocharger, due in 2009, also works with any conventional car, including ones whose engines have a turbocharger or supercharger — good news for car enthusiasts, who seek out such engines for the added power and acceleration they bring. The Electrocharger improves fuel economy in city driving by almost 60 percent by replacing a vehicle’s alternator with an electric generator, says Michael Van Steenburg, of VS Composites, based in Selma, Texas. Although the Electrocharger will be cheaper upfront than the Poulsen plug-in hybrid system, it will cost from $3 to $5 to juice the Electrocharger for a 80 kilometre range.

The Electrocharger can be installed by any mechanic, Van Steenburg says. “The connectors are color coded and unique for each connection. Our plan is to work with licensed installers who have been educated on all aspects of the system. Since installation takes about 3 hours, most professional service shops would charge about $180 to $225 for the install.”

I can’t locate the website you are speaking of and VS Composites doesn’t have any information on their website regarding the upcoming release.

Q: Which FORD is a better used Vehicle?
I was currently shopping for another vehicle since my old one has too many problems… these are the only two i found within my budget – 2008 Ford explorer XLT & a 2008 Ford escape XLT which one is a better used vehicle? more reliable/less problems…

A: Hello,

My family owned an 06 Ford Explorer. Its a good looking SUV, inside and out. It is kinda sluggish though and terrible on gas(one of the reasons we sold it). The explorer can fit 7 passengers though. The engine in my opinion is too large. We didn’t have any major problems with it though.

The explorer your looking at has been driven too much. I’m guessing it will problems because it was a rental and people often abuse cars.

I have seen the Escape before. It looks good too. Its small and very fuel efficient. It has decent amount of power and more versatile than explorer. Explorer is kinda bulky. I’m not sure about Escape’s reliability but I’m guessing its a good reliable Ford.

In conclusion, I would go for the Escape because of versatility and fuel efficiency, but if you want space (7 passenger) then go for the explorer.

Q: What kind of lubricant do I use for the manual transaxle? How about the transfer case? – 2003 Ford Escape 4cl
The manual just says to use the “recommended lubricant” but I can’t find anywhere what that would be. Please let me know what I’m looking for when I walk into the autoparts store. Thanks.

A: your local ford dealer would know.my guess would be either automatic tranny fluid or 90 weight gear oil.check your local ford dealer.
